"Expanding on the word ‘interpretation’, whilst I have the upmost respect for the technique books written by the greats and admiration for the wonderful syllabuses created by the governing bodies that I studied to gain my qualifications, I still believe that many fail to communicate these beautiful ideas successfully.
For many years, the ability to communicate choreography clearly, the avoidance of unnecessary technical jargon and the desire to share my knowledge and passion* for dance has been my obsession.
*I write ‘passion’ as I felt that a barely controllable devotion was a little too much.
Like you, as a consumer of knowledge, I’ve waited a considerable time for a syllabus that I believe both embraces & encompasses all of the benefits of modern technologies as well as acknowledges that times are changing. Having spent nearly three decades striving to master the ability to perform and share my knowledge and passion for dance, I’ve decided to create a free, constantly evolving syllabus of my own.
For years I’ve thought that much of the existing reading material requires far too much prior knowledge for an absolute beginner to understand the ideas the writer is trying to convey. These sources are littered with technical gobbledygook which inadvertently makes the ideas difficult to understand.
I've always wanted to create a free source of information that an absolute beginner can understand, and a more experienced dancer can use to revisit the important principles and foundations of dance. This syllabus will constantly evolve, reacting to feedback we receive from those who’ve read it.
I believe that written or pre-recorded video lessons will NEVER replace in person tuition, be that in a public class or via private 1-2-1 lessons. The content we create is to prepare individuals for tuition in person with a qualified teacher like myself and to complement the process of practice.
Advancing your dance knowledge and abilities can only be achieved by the assistants of a qualified teacher whose experience and knowledge will guide you through your learning journey.
Our content will initially be published in the form of a blog on our website. This way our Club Members won’t have to wait years for this project to be completed! Each time we complete a substantial topic, we will notify those who are signed up to our free email service.
Whilst this will take some considerable time (most dance related books are between 130 - 350 pages long), we will release our ideas and information for no cost to our Club Members, to those they share it with and to those who discover it.
Your feedback that I greatly look forward to will significantly affect the evolution of this syllabus and guide. Whilst your suggestions may not initially appear, this could be due to our belief that your idea(s) may have a significant impact elsewhere within the guide.
To reiterate the importance of its readers, our free guide will be constantly evolving and reacting to your feedback.
Have a wonderful time learning to dance,
Steven & Maggie Ford"
