Explanation Of The Three Session Types

SESSION ONE: For Those Who Feel They’re At The Beginning Of Their Dance Journey

Recognising some members feel a little nervous about attending practice events, this session is perfect for people with these feelings. For Beginners & those who haven't been dancing for very long, this session is for you. Before each dance, we spend around 5 minutes reawakening some basic steps for the 6 dances listed below.

This means that if you feel you can't remember your dances, we will give you a short & very simple routine that will enable you to dance each one & help to wake-up your dance brain. Don't worry if you haven't covered all of these dances yet, the mini lesson will give you some steps to get you started.
  1. Foxtrot
  2. Quickstep
  3. Waltz
  4. Rumba
  5. Cha Cha
  6. Jive
This isn’t random; it has a clear purpose. It has been thoughtfully structured to help you settle into the session and allows you to gradually awaken your memory without overwhelming you. As the session unfolds, each dance gradually prepares you for the next.

We begin with the FOXTROT, a calm and steady dance that gives your body time to remember how to move in partnership. With soft steps and a gentle tempo, it’s the perfect way to settle into the session without pressure. It gently reconnects you to the tuition you’ve previously received. With its Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick rhythm, the Foxtrot introduces an early focus on musicality. This light and shade within the timing helps you rediscover control and character from the very beginning, setting a confident, relaxed pace for the rest of the session.

Next comes the QUICKSTEP. Due to its similarity, this feels like a natural progression rather than a sudden jump. Whilst the Quickstep naturally moves with a little more speed, this is a session designed for beginners, so the tempo increase is minimal. Having already reawakened a very similar movement and rhythm from the Foxtrot, the partnership principles remain the same. This existing knowledge gives you increased confidence and understanding.

We then move into the WALTZ, slowing down the session, your heart rate and your mind. The Waltz helps to refine balance and control.

From there we transition into the RUMBA. After three Ballroom dances, this slow and steady Latin dance allows you to focus on movement in relationship to your partner, with a little ‘armography’ too. This shift encourages you to think more deeply about how you can lead or follow and how clearly you communicate your intentions. It’s a subtle challenge; just enough to awaken additional coordination capabilities.

Next is the CHA CHA. Having already established the Rumba pattern, you simply increase the tempo slightly whilst ‘Cha Cha-fying’ the Rumba.

Finally, we finish with the JIVE, the highest energy dance of the session. By saving it until last, we ensure your coordination and confidence are fully activated. You will leave smiling, uplifted and proud; the perfect finish for this session.

SESSION TWO: For Those Who’ve Been Dancing A Little Longer, Still a Beginner or Maybe an Improver

Session Two is designed for dancers who are beginning to feel more comfortable moving without step-by-step reminders & are ready to explore their dancing with slightly more independence.

Just like Session One, this session is supportive, friendly & encouraging, but the focus shifts slightly. In this session, personal help is still available, however we no longer pause the group to revise steps before each dance; instead, the session flow is continuous, allowing you to build stamina for your mind & body.

This session is perfect for dancers who:
  • Want to strengthen their muscle memory without relying on initial prompts.
  • Feel ready to practise what they’ve learned in lessons more freely.
  • Would like to build confidence navigating around others.
  • Are beginning to feel more comfortable thinking, moving & responding while dancing.
We also introduce one additional Ballroom dance during this session, the TANGO, bringing the total to 7 dances:
  1. Foxtrot
  2. Quickstep
  3. Waltz
  4. Tango
  5. Rumba
  6. Cha Cha
  7. Jive

SESSION THREE: For Those Who Feel They’re More Confident Dancers

This session follows the same continuous-flow format as Session Two, but with the addition of three further dances: the Viennese Waltz & Paso Doble.
  1. Foxtrot
  2. Quickstep
  3. Waltz
  4. Viennese Waltz
  5. Tango
  6. Paso Doble
  7. Rumba
  8. Cha Cha
  9. Samba
  10. Jive

A Thought To Take With You Onto The Dancefloor

There’s something we see time and time again.

In class, everything feels clear. You understand the steps. You follow the routine. You feel like you’ve got it.

And then something changes. You arrive at the social evening. The room is buzzing. The music feels different. People are dancing around you.

Suddenly, it feels harder than it did in class.

If you’ve ever felt that, please know this:

You’re not doing anything wrong.

You’re simply stepping out of what we call The Lesson Bubble & into real dancing.

This space in between, where what you know meets what actually happens, is what we call The Gap.
And it’s completely normal.

Supervised Practice is the perfect Bridge between classes and Social events and it is where real dancers are made.

These Supervised Practice sessions are designed to gently help you through that space. Not by rushing you & not by testing you, but by giving you time to experience, adjust & grow with support around you.

You don’t need to be perfect here.

You just need to be willing to have a go, make small mistakes and keep going.

Because over time, something very special begins to happen. The steps stop feeling like something you have to remember & start feeling like something you can use.

A Gentle Note On Practising On Your Own

Practising on your own can be incredibly helpful.

It gives you space to think. It helps you remember the steps. It builds familiarity.

And this is where practising on your own has its limits.

Because when you practise alone, nothing changes around you.

There’s no other couples to respond to. No shared space to navigate.

Real dancing is different.

And that’s why these Supervised Practice sessions matter.

They gently introduce the parts of dancing you simply can’t practise alone. Awareness of others, changing a step to react to your dancefloor environment & those other small decisions that happen in the moment.

It’s not about replacing your practice at home or in a venue you hire.

It’s about completing it.

Practising alone helps you remember the steps. Dancing with others teaches you how to dance.
